Meet Arleen Garza, a true trailblazer, community leader, and the host of the Empowered Investing with Leading Ladies podcast. She’s all about supporting women in the workplace and ensuring every female out there has an equal shot at success and growing their wealth.

Arleen’s own journey from humble beginnings has given her a deep appreciation for hard work and the importance of planning for a bright future. Her passion lies in empowering others to achieve financial success through multifamily real estate investing.

As the founder of REEP, a company with a 44% female workforce, Arleen creates an environment where women are encouraged to take the lead, innovate, and excel, ultimately achieving financial success.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we had the chance to have a quick Q&A session with Arleen, to learn more about her journey, thoughts, and advice.

Q: What was the beginning of your career journey like?

A: My journey in the banking industry began when I connected with recruiters during my time at college. This led to my first role as a credit analyst at a prominent national bank. Within a year, I was entrusted with managing the International Private Banking department, a remarkable promotion at the age of 23. Despite my limited experience at the time of applying for this role, I showed an ability to learn quickly and a strong work ethic. This opportunity allowed me to engage with clients and educate them on investment matters.

Q: When did you launch your own business?

A: In 2012, my spouse, Jacob Garza, and I established a real estate investment firm. Our journey began with the acquisition of a modest 24-unit apartment complex, and since then, we have expanded our portfolio to encompass 33 multifamily properties across Texas, collectively valued at over $720 million. This significant growth has been made possible through collaboration with our investors and the remarkable efforts of our dedicated employees.

Q: What holds the utmost significance for you in running your own business: dedication, discipline, or passion?

A: For me, passion takes precedence. It not only fuels dedication but also propels the discipline needed to stay committed. I resonate with Oprah Winfrey’s quote: “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.”

Q: What do you love most about your job?

A: I take great joy in witnessing the growth and collaboration within our team. We aim to be champions for our employees, fostering an enriching work culture for them to flourish and offering opportunities that surpass what one individual can accomplish alone., but as a group, we can move mountains.

Q: What inspires and drives you in your business?

A: I am driven and inspired when I see how others are positively impacted by the work we do at our company.  With the significant responsibility of providing housing for 15,000 residents in our apartments, we take our duty to enhance the communities we serve very seriously.

Q: What are you looking to accomplish in the future?

A: We’ve set the ambitious goal of growing our business to 10,000 units and over $5 billion in assets over the next 5-7 years while preparing our young adult children to one day manage our legacy business. Simultaneously, we aim to expand the Garza family foundation, striving to achieve a philanthropic impact equivalent to at least 10% of our earnings.

Q:  What advice would you offer women in the business world today?

A:

  1. Always be proactive in asking for what you want. Six of my significant career advancements were the result of my directly seeking out opportunities.
  2. Seek out a mentor or advocate in your field who can impart invaluable knowledge and expose you to opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed.
  3. Consistently seek constructive feedback to identify areas for improvement. Remember, silence is not golden if it leads to regrets about missed opportunities.

Q: What would you say the top 3 skills most valuable to a woman in any business environment would be?

A:

  1. Listen. Being a good listener as you will learn a lot more by listening.
  2. Have a voice. Don’t be afraid to speak up – if you don’t speak up, no one will know how you think or feel on a particular topic.
  3. Trust yourself. Be confident and raise your hand to tackle or take on responsibilities others may not want.

These skills have enabled me to cultivate strong relationships (listening), advocate for others (speaking up), and gain exposure to opportunities that positioned me for greater responsibilities (raising my hand).

Q:  Who is the most inspiring woman in history or within your own family, and why?

A: My greatest inspiration is my mother, Eva. Despite not having the opportunity to attend college herself due to financial constraints, she dedicated herself to ensuring that all ten of her children would have the chance to pursue higher education, a goal she accomplished. Even while managing the responsibilities of raising a large family, she consistently made time to volunteer, instilling in us the value of giving back and supporting others.
